Writer's Notebooks:
Our writer's notebooks are a representation of each of our unique personalities. We included special people, places, memories, and some of our favorite things on the outside of our notebooks. Personsville students will be using their writer's notebook to record ideas, take notes from mini-lessons, and to house examples of mentor texts that we'll be writing this year. We enjoyed taking a "gallery walk" to admire each other's personalized notebooks and learning more about one another. Check them out!

Writer's Notebook and Writer's Folder
Students will be using a writer's notebook and a writer's folder this year. The writer's notebook will be used for collecting ideas, brainstorming, taking notes from mini-lessons, and housing writing examples of different types of writing. The writer's folder will be where students will draft, edit, and revise their writing as well as receive teacher feedback. Students will not be publishing work in this folder.
Writing Genres
Personal Narrative: (September-October)
The first writing piece that students will be learning is a personal narrative. A personal narrative is a story about something that happened to you and how you felt about it. The purpose of a personal narrative is to entertain the reader and tell about an important event. Students will be brainstorming special people, places, and memorable experiences in their writer's notebook for their narrative. I encourage you to talk with your child about memorable experiences at home to help him/her generate ideas for a story. We will be focusing on "small moments" and how to use descriptive details to bring our stories to life! Below is a short power-point presentation about the personal narrative with a writing example as well as a non-example to showcase this writing genre.
Leads
Leads are an interesting way to begin your writing that will "hook" the reader! We've been learning about different ways that we can start our personal narrative to grab the reader's attention. Below are links to the lessons that we've done so far on leads. Ask your child about which lead he/she is using in his/her writing and why!
